This Friday we are gathering to write letters of love and support to Bresha Meadows, as well as other incarcerated survivors in California prisons.
Please bring food to share & any stationery/pens/etc. you’d like to use. We will also provide stationery and art supplies.
Location TBD, but will be in Oakland.
Bresha Meadows is a 15-year-old Black girl who is facing murder charges for killing her abusive father, who was extremely violent to her mother for many years and terrorized her, her mother and her sisters. Bresha’s father threatened to kill the entire family, and her mother feared for their lives. He also owned a gun—which statistics show escalates domestic violence homicide risk by over 500%. Numerous studies have shown the ways that children are profoundly impacted by domestic violence, and Bresha’s actions occurred in this context of deep violence and trauma.
Bresha is a child and yet prosecutors are currently debating whether she should be tried as an adult or as a youth. If tried and convicted as an adult, she could face life in prison.
Prison is not a place for anyone, and to threaten a child with the possibility of life behind bars is abusive. Like Marissa Alexander and Cherelle Baldwin, Bresha’s case highlights the ways that criminalization furthers the impacts of abuse, and also demonstrates a pipeline between domestic violence and being funneled into the prison system.
